A very troubled Cho Seung-Hui decided to murder 30 people for no reason a couple days ago. This much we all know. But, just as any senseless act of violence, we are left wondering how and why. That is the problem, however. When dealing with someone as crazy as Cho, there is no why, which makes trying to understand why even more frustrating.
Is Cho's access to purchasing a Glock part of the problem, seeing that he had a history of mental health problems? You bet your ass. Can we at least do something about our gun control laws to make sure there are more thorough background checks in place? I should hope so. Will there be troubled people who fall through the cracks like out shooter, tragically yes.
Still, while people are looking for answers, sometimes they look in stupid places. The continual blame of a violent movie or explicit song comes up too often. Seems said troubled Cho identified with a movie previously reviewed here called "Oldboy" but I am hard pressed to blame a work of fiction for a deeply troubled person's act of violence. Here's the report. I would love to hear your opinions c101 readers. So, please weigh in...UPDATE, I love Slate for reason's like this.
As for music, I usually play something that relates to the post. But, no music I listen to relates to the post, so I will just post stuff I like. Here's Felix Da Housecat "Silver Screen" and LCD Soundsystem "Someone Great."
Someone Great

one of the many news broadcasts put up cho's picture holding the hammer next to the old boy picture holding the hammer trying to make the comparison. you can definately see the influence, however, i agree with you C$, you cant blame the movie. I dont blame strange brew for my problems and i'm sure some of your other readers dont blame brokeback mtn for the decisions they've made.
[1] Yeah, I am sure VD Steve doesn't blame Brokeback - well said Dale. Jebus made VD that way and it's high time VD accept it.
Simply put, Cho's mom took him off the teet a little too soon. It's amazing what proper nuturing will do for the soul of a child. Moreover, to all people, recognize, identify and help. Get involved! If Cho was the loner, invite him to a bong fest. If Cho seemed resentful at all the privledge, show him the power of simplicity and the happiness that is life. Remember all, we are all our brothers and (sisters) keepers.
Amen Bruche, amen.
