Today is a celebration. Why? I do not know, maybe I am having one of those take a step back days? We all know it is good to smell the roses, but nothing makes me smell with more vigor than the wonderful world of music.
Sure, I appreciate the word. Obviously. And I of course appreciate the picture, still and moving. But nothing seems to move and shake me like music. There is such a wide musical spectrum that it is unbelievable that all falls under the same category. So, today I want to post two songs that represent my spectrum. That is tough to encapsulate, to be sure, but I think I will attempt it.
Awhile back Fresh and I spoke about drawing a musical tree on his basement wall. Not necessarily everything, but just everything that we deemed essential. Wonder if he still is thinking about it? I'll have to ask him.
I think I will devote the next 7 days to musical greatness. I may divert at any point, but that is my goal. So, be on the lookout.
Anywyay, let's rok Donovan's (Does one rok Donovan?) "Lay of the Last Tinker" off A Gift From a Flower to a Garden. I have to thank VS for introducing the magic bard to me, but VS is good like that.
And then the other end, well, how about some hip-hop? I could go metal, with one of my other favorites being Tool, but I feel hip-hop is even further away. One of my favorite records of all time Eric B. & Rakim's "Mircrophone Fiend" off Follow the Leader. I remember borrowing the tape from Craig Anderson in 7th grade and then playing two bars, pausing the tape, writing down the lyrics and repeat, for the entire song. Still got it memorized to this day...I was fiend, before I became a teen...

Lay Of The Last Tinker

What about "76 Trombones" from Music Man or "If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof? Don't tell me that you don't rock the show tunes.
cam rocks Memories from Cats in the shower.
I'm not sure Donovan "roks" as it were. Just my opinion.
And I'm glad you reminded me about the music tree. I think that would be a great rainy weekend project. You can drive in, we can put on baggy, comfortable clothing, drop some Donovan on the turntable, drink a couple hot toddies and get down to business.
Seriously, this needs to be done . . . not the whole hot toddie thing, just the music tree. We'd probably fill all of the walls. The best part about it: I'm going to finish the basement. How great would that be to discover something like that behind the wall? You buy a house, decide to remodel the basement and behind the wood paneling (you know it, dark wood paneling and shag carpet - only the finest accoutrements in my basement baby) is this extensive map of all of the best music up until 2005. I'd flip.
Ohh! We can use the floor too! Hell Yes!
don't forget to include bruce springsteen in your tree!
"you can drive in, we can put on baggy, comfortable clothing, drop some Donovan on the turntable, drink a couple hot toddies and get down to business. "
cam uses this line on the ladies all the time.
[6] Yeah . . . . . ladies . . . .
every night since cam moved to chicago, he come's up to my room, knocks softly on my door, and whispers, "I have 2 hot toddies if you interested". It's very uncomfortable to say the least.
Donovan does rok. it's an aquired taste.
hail atlantis!
Donovan and a toddie does sound delicious. And sorry Beefer, I said my music tree, not yours. There is no room for the Boss on my tree. Glad that I jogged that memory of yours Fresh, I worry about you. And VS, how do you know what sweet nothings I whisper? I think I need to up my roofie dosage...
[4]Cams mom and I made good use of the floor last night.
[12] OOOOHHHHHH! SNAP!
I see I've been bamboozled once again by the C$. He didn't offer me any Donovan OR hot toddies the other night.
Sup C....
They were talking about Donovan on NPR last week.
Fun fact:
Donovan withdrew from performing and recording several times during his long career, but underwent a strong revival of interest in the 1990s with the emergence of the rave scene in Britain. Late in the decade he recorded a successful album with noted rap producer and longtime fan Rick Rubin and recently released a new album, Beat Cafe.
That is most def an interesting fact, Miss Jules. And Fresh you are dead meat along with Thunderpants for your mom crack.Good to see your back from the dead OpAmp - now, get angry!
WHOA! HEY! All I said was "oh snap," no need to bring the wrath for that. Can't we just have a hot toddy and get down to business?
did someone say hot toddies?? i'm in.
mmmmmmmmmm. hot toddies with c$ & VS
I'm so jealous of you all. Hot toddies make me bloated and gassy.
I used to live down the street from Cam's mom. She gave me hot toddies in the pool.

[22] OOOOHHHHHH! SNAP!
Don't visit ever again any of you. I didn't mean that. And good look eSwede on the sports tip. I am going to be chiming in left and right.
[17] Oww...I am angry. In Fact, I am freaking pissed! Angry that I do not have a job yet. I could have taken that $50,000 and invested in the Euro or precious metals. WTF....
