I’m curious, out of all the albums released this year, which one disappointed you the most? Which one would you like to see fade into obscurity? Which band made a big splash but never learned to swim? I’m going to go with the Artic Monkeys’ Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. The hype was hot, the album was decent and the backlash was completely expected. So where do they go from there? The A Monks will either come back with a fierce retort and show the critics they aren’t a fluke or they will lay a gigantic smelly turd that will contaminate most of he world’s major waterways. My guess is that they bomb (in the US) and no one (in the US) hears from them ever again. Anyone want to place a friendly wager on it? I'll give it 70:1 odds. Look for their new album in late spring.
A lot of heavy weights will return in 2007 with new material. First and foremost on the list is Radiohead, who went on tour last summer to road test new material that may, in all likely hood, end up on the next album. Most of the new material the band played harkened back to Radiohead’s guitar rock roots, eschewing the recent use of synthesizers for more traditional instrumentation. Hooray for rock! Other releases to look forward to and the odds that they may actually be decent:
January 23: The Shins – Wincing The Night Away (5:2) Menomena – Friend and Foe (75:1)
January 30: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Some Loud Thunder (75:1) Skinny Puppy - Mythmaker (200:1)
February 6: Bloc Party – A Weekend In The City (100:1)
March 6: Air – Pocket Symphony (30:1) Guns N’ Roses – Chinese Democracy (600:1) RJD2 – The Third Hand (5:2)
March 13: Type O Negative – Dead Again (90:1)
March 20: The Stooges – The Weirdness (300:1) LCD Soundsystem – Sound Of Silver (30:1)
Kings of Leon (20:1), Modest Mouse (5:1) and the Smashing Pumpkins (110:1) are also expected to drop albums in 2007. Should be an interesting year.
