Feist or Famine

I’m pretty well stuck on Feist’s new album Let It Die and I can’t even being to explain why. Leslie Feist does not play rock and roll or create electronica. But what she does do, she does very, very well. The best description of Feist’s music would be something like a cross between Goldfrapp, Nora Jones and Kings of Convenience.

Feist is soft but not slow, meek in some places but purrs in others and there is sort of a tongue-in-cheek mood to the entire album that bursts out between both the somber lyrics and arrangements and the quirky rhymes and exuberance. And if that wasn’t enough, her voice is spectacular.

Feist hails from Canada and has been paying her dues with some interesting folks, like her roommate Peaches (if you don’t know who Peaches is, I pity you, and boy are you in for a surprise), Broken Social Scene and a guest appearance on the next Kings of Convenience album, among others.

There is a certain swing that this little chicky has that can not be denied, be the first on your block to proclaim you love for this talented Canadian cutey.

You were right, I likey. I think she is an unscraggly Melanie. I've got a brand new key for Feist - y?

[1] I knew you would dig it. It's right up your alley. And what's more, I walked into Finders Records today and they were playing it in the store. I was happy, but then I left for fear of being accosted by some music store geek who would try to tell me that I wasn't cool enough to even listen to Feist. And then I'd say "Na-ah!"
Record Geek: Ya-huh!
Me: Na-ah!
RG: Ya-huh!
Me: Na-ah!
RG: Ya-HUH!
Me: Na-AH!
RG: YA-HUH!!
Me: NA-AHHH!

Luckily, that didn't happen.

These two tunes seem perfect for that Sunday morning coffee and newspaper routine. So, is the album good enough to "bonk and shonies" to? I might just have to put Leisure Sweet on replay next time I am in the mood. Hoho, but "I have said too much."

Most of this album is great to bonk to. Some of it is kinda of a downer, though, but most of it is great for lovin.

It seems like EVERY time I go to Finders to pick up something Belle & Sebastian related I get a lesson or some factoid from the clerk. Like: "You know this one is just an EP, right?" or "Have you ever seen these guys live? They're great!"
I just wanna grab him by the ears and yell "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I'M BELLE!" Even though I'm not. But I hate being condescended to by record store clerks.
